Since the initial discovery and archaeological research conducted by Jerome Handler and
Frederick Lange in the 1970s, Newton plantation has contributed substantially to the narrative of the enslaved experience for Barbados. Archaeology and anthropological practice at this space, has given insight not only into diet, burial practices and working life of the enslaved on the plantation but also insight into ideas of enslaved identity, cultural and spiritual reflection. We explore in this lecture the centrality of that enslaved experience and how we may commemorate and celebrate its stories for present and future audiences.
